We have just completed a major website upgrade [http://www.ecobuddhism.org] to include the "Buddhist Climate Project". It features HH Dalai Lama's endorsement of the 350 [Safe-Climate] Target, and presents the text and signing module for "A Buddhist Declaration on Climate Change". The document was co-authored by Zen teacher David Tetsuun Loy and senior Theravadin teacher Bhikkhu Bodhi -- HH Dalai Lama is its first signatory.

Another webpage introduces the new book "A Buddhist Response to the Climate Emergency" with chapters by the Dalai Lama, Gyalwang Karmapa and a broad group of Buddhist teachers from Vajrayana, Zen and Theravada. It is available May/June from Wisdom Publications' US website.

Any Buddhist can now sign the Buddhist Declaration on Climate Change online [http://www.ecobuddhism.org/buddhist-declaration.php]. The aim is that 100-200 Buddhist spiritual leaders will do so by mid-summer, along with as many regular members of the international Buddhist community as possible. The first press releases/publicity will be made around mid-summer, with a view to constructively influence the UN Climate Treaty negociations in Copenhagen [COP-15; December 2009].

Hi Joe,

I agree with you on this. The media have a tendency to simplify the issue and they do not help things when they show shots of Nepali soldiers beating Tibetans and imply that it is taking place in China, as they often did at the time of the trouble.

The rioting was not simply a result of economic disadvantage, although that was certainly one factor. There was, and still is, a serious denial of fundamental human rights in Tibet--a kind of 'cultural genocide' as His Holiness has called it.

His Holiness called on both sides to end the violence, and he is all too aware that Tibetans may turn to violence in the absence of his leadership. But I believe it is fair to say that noone in recent years has done more to promote the cause of *universal* peace and nonviolence than HH.

Ehhh... the clip is a wee bit dishonest: it starts by showing violent rioting Tibetans - probably mostly angry about economic disadvantage - and implies that this was violence directed *against* Tibetans.

About 16 ethnic Hans were murdered by rioting Tibetans... what would the French government do if right wing radicals rioted and murdered Algerians? They might clamp down?

Honesty, integrity, non-violence: stand up for them, even if this means criticisng Tibetans! That is the test of whether Buddhists are something special or just another sect blind to its own 'sides' short comings.

Oh my ... I hadn't heard.

His translation of Tashi Namgyal's "Mahamudra; Quintessence ..." has been never out of reach for more than a dozen years.

May his profound generosity and skill be always inspiration to us.

Mangalam! Tashi Delek!

Virtually unknown? That's silly. She's famous, and getting more so.

And "like many Tibetans has only one name" is also silly. Tibetans do and have had many more names per person than other cultures in the world. Tsering Ozer ('Longlife Lightray') is two words, and might as well say two names. Who started this cross-cultural misinformation? Why have I heard it repeated so many times recently?

Tucked away in a little Brazilian village in 1981, there I was, 11 years old, devouring all his teaching through his amazing books. He opened up a world of transcedental beauty for my avid eyes and for that I will be forever grateful to him. This tragedy is a great lost for this world but I will be forever grateful for him to take his place into this world and light so many candles around him. Om Shanti

The million Tibetan war-dead will shout 'hooray' for this event while the tIbetans currently facing Chinese bulltes for demanding independence will eternally thankful for such a timorous self-censorship.

I feel heartfelt sadness at the news of Lobsangla's tragic death. I met him in Santa Fe in the early '90's when I was just starting to work on my book, The Life of Gampopa. He and Gisela were tirelessly kind and generous to me, embodying the highest spirit of friendship and hospitality. Lobsang served me endless Indian tea and cookies while he generously volunteered his time and knowledge in helping me with translations. I was honored and touched to be able to spend some precious hours with this great man. Lobsang truly embodied bodhichitta in his loving-kindness, compassion, generosity of spirit, refinement and graciousness. Despite his many accomplishments and relative fame, he was ever down to earth, soft-spoken and joyful. We shared many laughs together, and I will always remember his shining gentle eyes. I feel grateful and uplifted for having known him. A light has gone out of our world, but I am certain that he will benefit many beings wherever he emanates

I'm deeply moved by this news. I met him in New York over 30 years ago, when he was working on his Life of Milarepa translation with Lord Pentland and Far West Editions. He was my first connection with the Dharma. I've thought of him countless times, and treasure his translations. I was so hoping to someday see him again on trips to Taos, where I was born. He definitely changed my life and I bow deeply. With love to his family, students and friends.
